古い知合いのCさんからC面カットの英文についてのメールを頂きました。
どうもありがとうございます。NIFTYのFIBMJの頃から名前はお見受けして
いたような気が。ちなみに私はあれこれハンドルを変えています。

それによれば、C面取りの英語は"chamfer"だそうです。
パソコンから出てきた言葉ではなく機械設計全般でごく一般的に使用され
ている言葉との事です。角の処理にはスパッと直線的に切り取るC面取り
と角を丸めるR面取り(radius)があるという補足も頂きました。

asahi,comで辞書を引くと
chamfer　 n. 【建】（木材・石材などの角をそいだ）面(めん).
　　　　　　　―vt. …の角をそぐ, 面取りを施す; （円柱などに）溝を掘る. でした。

んでもって、勇気百倍でgoogleやら米IBMのサイトを検索しましたが、ろくに
ヒットしませんでした。

続いて当時の製品に関する評価に何かないかとOverViewを片っ端から見て
いったのですが、特にデザインに関する評価は見当たりませんでした。出て
きたフォルムはそのまま受け入れているというか、特には評価はしないという
のでしょうか。日本のように重箱の隅を突っつくというか、ウンチクを書いてい
るような記事は見つけられませんでした。

あえて引っ張り出せば

どうしても見つからなくて片っ端からやって、最終的に

taper　　n. 細いろうそく, ろう引き灯心; 弱い光; 先細り（状）.

　　　　　―v. 次第に細くなる［する］ （off）; 次第に減じる （off）.
　という表現にいきあたりました。

　　　tapered=先細の、という意味のようです。
ということで、日本IBMの発表の中のC面カットはかなり意訳しているのか、
あるいは日本で追加されたのでは、という気がしています。


と、脱線してますね。なかなか本題が進みません。
